Ogoni group threatens to block East-West Road

Ogoni group threatens to block East-West Road

If the Ogoni Ethnic Nationality and several civil society organisations made true their threat, the Eleme-Onne section of the East-West Road would be blocked from midnight of Tuesday, July 27, 2021.

This according to the aggrieved groups is due to the failure of the Federal Government to fix the portion especially the collapsed Eteo Bridge.

The development followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum handed down by the Ogoni Peoples Assembly (OPA) on the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the Federal Government to fix the road.

An environmental right activist and OPA leader, Akpobari Celestine, said in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Thursday that a peaceful non-violent protest would begin from Tuesday.

“I wish to inform you that the 14 days ultimatum given to Hon Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Godswill Akpabio and the Federal Government of Nigeria expires 12 midnight on Monday 26th July, 2021.

“I am putting you on notice to expect some peaceful non-violent mass protest from the Ogoni people and some solidarity support from other ethnic nationalities and human rights groups from Tuesday the 27th July, 2021.”
