An oil tanker belonging to China Shipping Tanker Company caught fire on Monday off Shanghai waters, leaving five seafarers injured and one dead, according to local reports citing Shanghai maritime authorities.
The 45,740-dwt oil tanker Ye Chi was transporting 29,000 tonnes of diesel, departing Shanghai’s southwestern Jinshan and heading to Singapore. The incident happened when the ship was approximately 8.8 nautical miles southwest of Dayang Shandao, reports said.
The 2009-built ship was carrying 25 crew members when the deck quarters caught fire, injuring five seafarers. Another seriously injured seafarer died in the hospital, it was reported.
Rescue vessels and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene and the fire has been put out. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
