One migrant dies, three free of ebola

The results of Ebola tests performed by Malta’s Mater Dei Hospital on three migrants have turned out negative. One of the tested migrants died from unrelated causes, with two others in critical condition, The Malta Independent reports.

The remaining migrants will be quarantined for a period of twenty-one days, which is the Ebola incubation period.

The Armed Forces of Malta Rescue Coordination Centre rescued over eighty migrants yesterday, mostly adults, from a dinghy in Maltese territorial waters.

The migrants were in distress, and considering inclement weather conditions, AFM decided to proceed with the rescue operation East of Malta.

According to The Malta Independent, the rescued migrants said that more people originally boarded the dinghy, but the exact number of those missing, presumed dead, is unknown. Some migrants reportedly died on the dinghy during the crossing and were thrown overboard, but AFM so far has not found any bodies in the area.

AFM brought the migrants to Haywharf Base in Floriana. Most of the migrants are reportedly from Ivory Coast, Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso.
