The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to unlocking the vast potential of its maritime sector, driving innovation, and championing sustainability.
Speaking at a “Stakeholders Sensitsation Workshop on Deep Seabed Activities in Nigeria”, Oyetola emphasised the critical role of government-private sector partnerships in harnessing the nation’s marine resources.
“Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind in the new frontier of deep-sea exploration,” Oyetola stressed, highlighting the establishment of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in 2023 as a testament to the country’s dedication to economic diversification.
NIMASA Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, reiterated the agency’s commitment to implementing relevant legislative frameworks for sustainable marine environment use and safety standards, in collaboration with the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and relevant MDAs. Mobereola noted that amending the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act 2007 to reflect the ISA’s model legislation on exploration and exploitation is crucial.
