An oil spill occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal, SMI, in Bonny, Rivers State.
The incident, caused by a ruptured pipeline, led SPDC to promptly shut down the affected pipeline and deploy containment booms to protect nearby communities.
Despite these efforts, the spill has reached the shoreline.
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said it has established an emergency operations center to monitor the situation closely.
It said it is working with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the spill’s extent and determine the necessary next steps.
The agency urged residents to remain calm, as it reaffirmed its commitment to minimising the spill’s impact and restoring affected areas.
