Gunmen suspected to be pirates kidnapped 10 passengers on Monday along the Bonny waterway in Rivers State. The attack occurred around 10 a.m. while the boat was travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of passengers and crew members on the waterway, a major transportation route in the region.
Israel Waribo Pepple, District Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Rivers State District, confirmed the incident, stating that 10 people were involved.
The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident, with the officer in charge of marine operations tasked with ensuring the release of the kidnapped victims and the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, according to spokeswoman Grace Iringe-Koko.
