The police on Friday arraigned four clearing agents before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a 40ft container containing five cars at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos.
The clearing agents are Stephen Okwuemu (27), Bolaji Manuwa (48), Augustine Manuwa (46) and Dele Ipinumidun (41).
They are facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Marvelous Obongha, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 22, 2018 at about 6pm at Tin-Can Island Port, Apapa.
“The defendants conspired together to steal a 40ft container with number BMOU6573681 with truck number AAA 860 XV containing five cars namely; Two Toyota Corrola cars, one Toyota Camry car, one Hyundai car and one Infinity car and other properties valued at N18 million belonging to one Oderinle Samuel of No 8, Opanusi Street, Somolu, Lagos,” Obongha said.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 287(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.
Magistrate Temitope Babalola granted the defendants bail in the sum N1 million with two responsible sureties in like sum who must be gainfully employed.
The sureties, according to the Magistrate must furnish the court with six months bank statement and evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till November 6, 2018 for mention.
