The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) yesterday raised alarm over fake car auctions that have flooded various social media site especially Facebook.
They also warned Nigerians against falling victims to the antics of the fraudsters that pretended to be Customs officers.
This warning was contained in a statement released on the official Facebook page of the national headquarters of the NPF.
“Beware of an unrealistically low price! You can loose your money and identity! Don’t fall for phishing scams,” the short statement reads.
The Police also advised that Nigerians should always ignore posts on auctions they see on social media.
“Don’t fall victim! Please advise your friends to do the same,” it warned.
However, Nigerians who visited the Facebook page applauded the Police for the warning while others berated the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for not doing enough to dissociate itself from the fake auction messages.
One of the respondents, Salako Temitayo said the Police should go extra mile to arrest the culprits: “Thank you for the post but I will implore the Nigerian Police to trace and arrest the culprits.”
Another follower, Vincent Amaefula posted: “Good job guys but I think it should not end there. Police should investigate and fish out the people doing this so that others can learn from it.”
But Obed Samson criticized the Nigerian Customs Service for not doing enough to stop the spread of the message. He stated: “These scam messages have been viral in recent times and I expected the Nigeria Customs Service to have come on air to vehemently condemn and dissociate themselves from it. However, thank you NPF.”
Another visitor to the page, Femi Mulero Oke charged the NCS to embark on public awareness for the authentic auction.
“Nigerian Customs should sensitise the public about their auctions so that people will know a fraudulent auction to the right one,” he stated.
