Port of Hong Kong marks double-digit volume dip

Total cargo throughput at the Port of Hong Kong dropped 11% year-on-year to 68.4 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2015, according to the city’s Census & Statistics Department.

Within this total, inward port cargo decreased 16% to 40.5 million tonnes, while outward port cargo dropped 5% to 27.8 million tonnes.

The port of Hong Kong handled 5.3 million TEUs of containers during the quarter, down 10% year-on-year. Laden containers fell 11% to 4.5 million TEUs, and empty containers fell 4% to 800,000 TEUs.

Among laden containers, inward containers decreased 9% to 2.3 million TEUs, and outward containers fell 12% to 2.2 million TEUs.

The number of ocean vessel arrivals dropped 2% to 7,500 in the quarter, with the total capacity increasing 2% to 104.5 million net registered tons.
