Ports open for normal operation despite NLC protest

The various seaports across the country are operating unhindered despite an ongoing protest rally across the country called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC protest, scheduled to hold all over the country today and tomorrow, was called by leaders of the labour union to compel the Federal Government to accede to the demands of university lecturers and non-academic staff, to enable students of public universities, who have been at home since February, return to school.

The protest grounded commercial activities in parts of Lagos State on Tuesday, while it was also held peacefully in other states such as Ogun, Osun and Oyo.

In Lagos, the protest started at Ikeja Under-bridge around 9:00am with the leadership of NLC and representatives of subsidiary unions including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) in attendance.

The protests notwithstanding, activities proceeded as normal in Apapa with the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port open for normal operation.

Port workers, clearing agents and Customs officials were seen at both ports processing cargo clearing and delivery documents. Truckers also went about their normal haulage activities unhindered.

The same situation prevails at Onne, Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar ports, which are all operating unhindered by the protesting workers.
