Operations resumed fully at the nation’s seaports this morning as the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) suspended the strike action they started on Tuesday.
The indefinite strike was called to protest the battering of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and some other executives of the congress in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as the pending labour issues in Imo State.
SHIPS & PORTS reported on Tuesday that the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) joined other affiliate unions of the unions to enforce a nationwide strike at the seaports.
MWUN officials had put the ports of Apapa, Tin-Can, Onne, Rivers, Warri and Calabar under lock and key, denying workers, Customs officials and clearing agents into the facilities.
However, the unions suspended the strike on Wednesday night following a meeting with a delegation of the Federal Government.
After the meeting, different affiliates and state chapters assessed the results of the meeting and decided to call off the strike.
The National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, confirmed the decision to suspend the strike.
“The NEC of the NLC and the TUC have suspended the strike. We did this based on our trust for the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who gave us his words,” he said.
