The Senate may have foreclosed either the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) or the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) emerging the proposed technical regulator for port operations in the country.
The upper legislative body, it was learnt, is working at creating a technical regulator that is approved by industry operators, and which will look out for the interests of shippers and other ports users.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Senator Zaynab Kure, said in Houston, Texas, United States (US), on the sidelines of the just-concluded annual Oil Technology Conference (OTC), that the Senators are not in favour of any of the two government agencies taking over the function of the technical regulator of the industry.

Kure pointed out that before the bill, which will soon go through second reading is passed, it will first go to the public for inputs.
“We are not going to take any of the existing establishments, it is going to be thrown to the public to decide and whatever they decide will stand,” she said.
