No. It was better the sector remains how it was before this administration came on board. All the promises made by this administration were just to cripple all that has existed before. They have made no serious impact. There is nothing to write home about this government when it comes to the maritime sector.If you get to the port, there is nothing good about it. So many people are seen hanging around the port because there means of livelihood has been destroyed.There is nothing to be hopeful for about this administration. I remember when they came on board; they said they were going to revamp the sector.Up till now, nothing has been done. The maritime sector calls for a lot of attention than any other sector. This is the gateway of the nation’s economy and yet is nothing to write home about.
No, rather he took us backward. The road we are plying is worse than how it was before he came into power. Containers can no longer come in. They fall on the road causing accidents everyday due to the bad road. There is double taxation in the clearing sector.Goods will be cleared at the port and getting to another place, another custom officer stops the container again. This administration has not made it easy at all for us in the maritime sector.
No because if you look at the situation of things now, the deplorable condition of the road is nothing to write home about and is making importers to spend much. In the past, if you want to clear a container that berthed, it takes two to three days and you are through with the documentation and clearing. But now, everything has changed. It takes so many weeks and months before documentation is done. As a result of this, we incur demurrage. The importers are discouraged because they are paying a lot to bring in goods into the country. I believe the solution to the problem is to repair the road especially at Tin-Can and Apapa.
I have not seen what President Buhari has done so far in this industry because we have challenges at the port, most especially the road which is very bad.There is congestion to the extent that if trucks come to load at the port, they spend a week and also coming out of the port, they spend another week. This is making the importers to pay for so many charges on their containers and it is affecting the masses. I would say this administration is not favourable to the maritime sector.
