The Lagos Seaport and Marine Command of the Nigerian Immigrations Service (NIS) has said that there has been no reported case of prostitution on the Lagos waters in the last one and half years.
The command, however, said that there were only two cases of stowaway involving Nigerians within the said period, stressing that the record is a clear indication that the Lagos waters are safe from illegalities.
Comptroller of Immigrations, Lagos Seaports and Marine Command, Mrs. Taiwo Olayemi made the revelation in a chat with journalists.
She noted that the cases of the two Nigerians who attempted to embark on an illegal journey overseas via the sea were arrested by those she described as gallant officers of the command.
The Immigrations Comptroller revealed that the culprits have been handed over to the Police for further investigations and necessary actions.
Olayerni revealed that officers and men of the command patrol Lagos waters, especially the Epe-Badagry axis on a daily basis to monitor activities of persons or groups.
“With 300 gallant officers and four patrol boats under my watch, the business of human trafficking and other illicit act on Lagos waters will be a thing of the past,” she said.
Olayemi however called on the federal government to provide more platforms and speed boats for officers to man the waterways more effectively.
”One of the core functions of the service is border policing and the ports are also border posts where foreigners gain access to our country easily. It is important to note that we are responsible for monitoring the movement of foreigners under our jurisdiction because don’t know the motive why they are here.”
