The House of Representatives joint committee on Public Service Matters, Employment, Labour, Productivy and Anti-Corruption, National Ethics and Values which is holding a public hearing on alleged racketeering in recruitment into federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) have continued to receive mind boggling information about anomalies in the employment of public officers.
Already the joint committee, chaired by Honourable Andrew Uchendu, has directed the board of the Nigerian Prisons, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to stop the collection of N1,000 application fee from applicants, asking that the board should also make refund, with immediate effect, to those who had already paid.
The committee, on Wednesday, also ordered the Nigerian Customs Service to provide it with its nominal roll and the list of all officers enlisted into the service in 2011, their level grades, states of origin and qualifications following the failure of the service to provide satisfactory answers to all the questions put to them. Representative of the Head of Service of the federation, Dr Ezekiel Oyemomi, who spoke at the public hearing, admitted that some of the MDAs were at times did not follow due process in their recruitments.
While declaring the public hearing open earlier, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, vowed that the House would do everything within its power to put an end to the ugly development.
“There is no doubt that the rise in violent crime today is related to the fact that millions of our people are jobless and therefore more vulnerable and easier to lure into a life of crime,” Tambuwal stated.
