The Rights Monitoring Group, a coalition of 45 civil society organisations, has appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to remove the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) from the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Speaking during a press conference in Lagos last Thursday, the National Coordinator of the group, Olufemi Akinbule Aduwo, said that the NCS, going by its importance, should be an autonomous organisation.
He saidthat tucking the organisation inside the Finance Ministry did not give room for dynamism, flexibility, as well as creativity, which, according to him, the Service needs to do better than it is currently doing.
Aduwo said that, with the current global economic downturn, status-quo were being changed to allow flexibility and dynamism, adding that if a country continued to do the same thing it would continue to get the same result.
He commended Comptroller-General of Customs Dikko Inde Abdullahi for great achievements since he assumed the leadership position of the Service.
Aduwo posited that the reform programme initiated initiated by Abdullahi had gone a long way to transform the lives and welfare of the personnel of the Service, and also impacted positively on the revenue generation of the country.
