The Russian Federation has proposed its first candidate for the position of the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
In a letter sent to the IMO, Russia nominated the Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport of Russian Ministry of Transport Vitaly Klyuev.
In September last year, current IMO Secretary-General, Koji Sekimizu disclosed his decision not to seek reelection at the end of his first term on 31 December 2015.
The post will become vacant on 1 January 2016, when a new candidate should be appointed.
The Danish Government confirmed the official nomination of Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority Andreas Nordseth as a candidate for the post.
Aside to Denmark, Cyprus has also set sights on the top position of the IMO with the Director of its Department of Merchant Shipping, Andreas Chrysostomou as potential candidate.
