The Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) has acquired a research vessel worth N1.9billion to aid its operations.
Also, the institute has launched its latest canned catfish into the nation’s market without due approvals from the National Agency for Foods, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
Executive Director of the institute, Dr. Gbolahan Akande, who disclosed this while conducting newsmen round the agency’s facilities in Lagos recently said the vessel would be used for fishery as well as researches.
Akande also announced that the institute adopted three secondary schools in Lagos State for its fish farming.
The schools, he said include Magbon Alade Community School, Ibeju-Lekki; Lagos Model School, Badore and Kings College, Lagos.
He however disclosed that the newly acquired vessel could do bottom trawling, which is a quantum leap from its past operations.
While conducting newsmen round the factory, where the canned catfish were produced, the Head, Section of the Extension Research and Liaison Services, Dr. (Mrs.) Mabel Yarhere, disclosed that the institute would soon register the new product.
She disclosed that the institute had plans to generate funds through sales of the canned catfish, assuring that; registration with NAFDAC will be done immediately they get the needed funds to do that.
