A 19-year-old seafarer has lost his life in an accident aboard the 6,266 TEU containership MSC Damla, a spokesperson from the ship’s owner Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) confirmed.
The incident occurred on March 28, while the 2002-built Post-Panamax boxship was in Antwerp, Belgium for routine operations.
Media reports cited Belgian officials as saying that the Indian national slipped and fell some 16 meters from narrow metal stairs into the containership’s hold.
“We are coordinating the necessary arrangements with local authorities,” the spokesperson added.
At the time of the incident the vessel was reportedly docked at MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET) in Antwerp.
An investigation into the incident was launched.
