Seme command goes tough on smugglers

Seized goods by customs

The Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has announced that it is adopting an aggressive anti-smuggling operation at the land borders.

Area Controller of the command, Mohammed Aliyu, stated this in a statement, adding that the command was deploying all necessary tools to ensure that the core mandate of the service, which involved revenue generation, facilitation of legitimate trade and suppression of smuggling was realised.

The statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Taupyen Selchang, Aliyu said, “Actualising the functions of revenue generation and legitimate trade facilitation depends solely on how smuggling activities are aggressively suppressed to the barest minimum.

“It is against this backdrop that the anti-smuggling unit of the command has intensified its operations in order to curb the menace of trans-border crimes including smuggling and other vices.

“The ongoing aggressive patrol of illegal routes and flanks of the border by the anti-smuggling unit is yielding tremendous results, and has translated into the seizure of numerous items.”

He listed items seized by the command to include 3,200 bags of rice, 1,000 cartons of frozen poultry products, 720 jerry cans of vegetable oil and 57 bales of second-hand clothing all valued at N54.5million.
