Shanghai records 5.3% higher box volumes in January

Shanghai, the world’s busiest container port, has posted higher box throughput in January this year compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Shanghai International Port (Group) Co (SIPG).

Last month’s volumes were recorded at 3.16million TEU , up 5.3% compared to 3million TEU seen in January 2014, data from SIPG showed.

In 2014, the Chinese port took the crown as the world’s busiest container port for the fifth consecutive year with an annual throughput growth of 35.29million TEU, up 4.5% from 33.77million TEU in 2013.

Shanghai port, which includes Waigaoqiao port, Yangshan port and Wusong port, handles more than 50,000 ships each year.
