Shipyard fire put out after seven-hour operation

Singapore firefighters have extinguished a fire that broke out on a large cargo barge berthed at Sembcorp Marine shipyard in Tuas, Singapore, reports said.

The fire was said to have raged on for seven hours from Monday afternoon before it was put out at around 10:30pm local time.

Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at the shipyard around late afternoon yesterday. About 70 SCDF personnel were sent to the scene, together with firefighting vehicles.

Local reports said no one was onboad the barge at the time of the fire, but a firefighter sustained a minor injury during the operation.

The blaze was said to have been triggered off by contents of a room in the barge, and the actual cause of the fire is under investigation.
