Leading Singapore maritime companies have paid tribute to the country’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew who passed away early on Monday morning.
Lee Kuan Yew, who was 91, was the founding father of modern Singapore.
Paying tribute Pacific International Lines (PIL) said: “PIL express its profound sadness on the demise of the Founding Father of modern day Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.
“Mr Lee’s passion and drive had successfully transformed Singapore from a Third World country to a prosperous country that many citizens are proud to call home. His vision and strength to do the right thing had ensured that Singapore succeed in the global economy with a striving maritime industry.”
Similar sentiments were expressed by global container terminal operator PSA: “Singapore as a nation owes much of its success to Mr Lee. He was the guiding force behind the country’s transformation from a sleepy British imperial outpost into a first-world global metropolis.
“As we mourn the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, PSA will strive to honour his memory by perpetuating his convictions and working alongside each other, with the same pioneering spirit of determination, nerve and focus as we build on our present success to create an even better future for the port industry and our generations ahead.”
Keppel Corp said: “The boards of directors, management and staff of the Keppel Group are deeply saddened by the passing of Founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Keppel is privileged to be part of the Singapore story crafted by a true visionary, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.”
A period of national mourning has been declared from 23 – 29 March. All Singapore-registered ships will fly the Singapore Red Ensign at half mast during the period of mourning.
