Tragedy struck again in Lagos on Monday as the rear tyres of a container-laden truck rolled over the head of a man crushing it to a pulp killing him instantly.
The unidentified man, a mate to the driver of the haulage truck with registration number LAGOS XT 727 LSR, was said to have been trying to place a wedge behind the tyres when they rolled over him.
“What used to be his head immediately became a mess of brain and bones,” an eye witness told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY.
The victim, said to be middle-aged Hausa, was said to have alighted from the truck after the driver suspected that it had brake failure.
“I saw him jump down from the truck in order to place a restraining wedge to stop it but unfortunately that something went wrong he the truck killed him,” the eye witness said at the scene of the accident near NAHCO Shed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road.
The corpse was evacuated to the mortuary of the Ikeja General Hospital, while the truck driver was arrested by policemen attached to the Hajj Camp Police Station.
This is the second fatal truck accident in Lagos within one week.
SHIPS & PORTS DAILY recalls that, Monday last week, a truck, which was allegedly trying to evade arrest by security operatives along the Tin-Can Island Port Complex (TCIPC) access road ran over a woman, killing her instantly.
Public Relations Officer of the TCIPC, Mr. Segun Adesanya, said the truck driver had driven against traffic on the port access road, and, while trying to evade arrest by security operatives attached to the port, “he drove over the curb and ran over the woman, killing her instantly.”
Adesanya said that the reckless driver ran away after killing the woman.
The incident sparked protest by agents and truck drivers operating within the TCIPC, as most of them alleged that the security operatives were trying to extort money from the truck driver.
