Truckers suspend planned strike

Truckers under the aegis of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) said that they have not called of their planned strike action but have only extended the deadline of the ultimatum given to the Federal Government.

The association had last week given the government up till August 26 to repair the roads leading into and out of Apapa or risk a strike by its members.

AMATO Chairman, Chief Remi Ogungbemi told SHIPS & PORTS DAILY yesterday that the ultimatum has been extended by one week following intervention by the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

“The Executive Director, Marine & Operations of NPA and General Manager, Western Ports and other stakeholders have intervened to say that the issue of port access road is a national issue and not a problem that is affecting only the truckers but we should synergies and that if need be, the whole port should be shut not just the truckers withdrawing their services so that the government can do complete work on the road and not just palliative.

“However, NPA has started work from the Tin can axis since Tuesday which we see as palliative and that is why we are extending it by one week to monitor them,” Ogungbemi said.
