The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) will train Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) officials under its “TrainForTrade Port Management Programme” (PMP) from March 18 – 22, 2024 in Warri, Delta State.
A total of 21 trainees made up of three women and 18 men are participating in the programme.
The UNCTAD PMP training was designed to support port communities in developing countries in delivering more efficient and competitive port management in the future.
In order to increase trade flows and foster economic development, the programme creates port networks bringing together public, private and international entities.
The aim of the training, according to UNCTAD, is “to share knowledge and expertise between port operators and strengthen talent management and human resources development in port communities”.
The UN agency said the training will strengthen institutional capacity and management efficiency of ports and related agencies in the country; promote port community participation and public-private partnerships; enhance the competitiveness of ports and the quality of their services; and improve the environmental sustainability and social responsibility of ports.
“The PMP provides technical assistance in various areas, including port planning, management and operations, logistics and supply chain management, port security, safety and environmental protection, and legal and regulatory frameworks,” the agency stated.
“As part of the activities of the English-speaking network of the TrainForTrade Port Management Programme (PMP), the trainees of the 3rd cycle of the port communities of Nigeria will complete all eight modules of the course on Modern Port Management for months (240 hours) from January 2022 to March of 2024.
“With the supervision of local port experts trained by UNCTAD, the trainees will also write a thesis consisting of a case study concerning a real problem and providing concrete recommendations to improve the performance of the port communities of Nigeria,” UNCTAD said.
It said the Module 8 training in Nigeria, which the final module of the course, is entitled “Technical Management and HR Development.”
“This module focuses on managing staff and the long-term planning of ports. Sessions are delivered by national instructors previously trained as trainers at TrainForTrade coaching and training-of-trainers seminars.
“Later in 2024, the trainees will defend their theses in front of a jury made up of international experts who are also members of the TrainForTrade network,” the UN agency stated on its website.
