The Nigerian Ambassador to the United States of America (USA), Ambassador Ade Adefuye, has revealed that the American government will provide the country with another war ship to assist in the fight against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
Disclosing this at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington during a courtesy call by a Nigerian delegation to understudy the implementation of the International Ships and Ports Facilities Security (ISPS) Code, Adefuye said that the vessel was expected to be handed over yesterday.
The Nigerian Ambassador said, “In the area of regional security, on the 7th of May, we are getting another ship from the Americans to compliment the former one they gave us, NNS Aradu. This one is even larger than the former one, NNS Aradu which goes to show the level of bi-literal cooperation between the two countries.”
He noted that the US government only has bi-literal agreement with only Nigeria and South Africa in the entire African continent. He said that the agreement with Nigeria covered four areas namely governance, energy and investment, food security and Niger Delta/regional security.
“Regional security is to ensure security along the Gulf of Guinea coast, prevent piracy from affecting maritime activities and things like that. In all these areas, there are notable achievements and I cannot go through all of them,” he stated.
