Usoro backs establishment of new national carrier

Former Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Mrs Mfon Usoro, on Friday said the Nigerian government “has nothing to lose” in floating a national carrier.

Speaking a the business luncheon of the Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria in Lagos, Usoro said those kicking against the floating of the national carrier are doing so because they “lack cogent information that has made everyone to be suspicious in the maritime sector”.

Director-General of NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside, who was represented at the event by the agency’s Director of Administration and Personnel Service, Ibrahim Fibril, while speaking at the event, said a national carrier would solve the problem of seatime training for cadets.

He said, “Nigeria is turning out graduate yearly from Maritime Academy of Nigeria and we do not have platform to engage them on sea time training.”

In her speech, the WISTA Nigeria President, Mrs Mary Hamman, said there was need for Nigerias to support the federal government’s change agenda.
