In this edition of Layman Page, Lydia Ojarikre went to town to ask average Nigerians what they think about working in the shipping sector. You will certainly find their responses a pleasurable read.
Yes of course, I would like to work in the shipping sector because it is a sector with prospects. It is a broad and interesting sector where one gets to learn a whole lot. If given the opportunity, where I would like to work is the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

Yes, I would like to work in the shipping or maritime sector. I would like to work with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) because it is a foremost United Nations agency in the maritime sector. The organization is responsible for developing international regulation for the shipping industry which includes measures to deal with safety, the environment, technical co-operation, legal issues and security. The organization also sets international maritime standards through a number of conventions which are of importance to seafarers because they have a direct impact on living and working conditions. Working with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) would benefit me because the organization encourages young people to consider a career at sea as a viable attractive and enticing career option. It would also be beneficiary in the sense that you get to gain a lot of experience, build a strong career path and meet influential people because the organization also invites aspiring and current seafarers, organizations, ship-owners, governments, port authorities and general supporters across the world to share their stories about life at sea and to be ambassadors for their own industry.

Yes of course, I would like to work in the shipping sector because the industry is filled with great opportunities. Though what I studied in the university doesn’t apply to the main workings of the industry, it only applies to a sub-section of the shipping sector which is finance but then how many people in Nigeria really get to work in their area of specialization. If given the opportunity, I would like to work in the Finance department of either Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) or Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) because my career path is Banking and Finance.

Yes, I would like to work in the shipping sector. If the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have some economics related aspect in their mode of operation, I am sure they would need me. I would like to work with them to help in the little way I can as an economist.

Yes, I would like to work in the shipping sector NIMASA to be precise because they create conducive working condition for their staff, train their staffs to meet up with international standard and their salary is attractive. In June 2011, the agency promoted 60% of its staff that means there is also room for growth in the sector.

There is job security, while working on a ship you get to travel ‘’see the world’’, you build friendship with crew members, you have opportunities for advancement , cross training opportunities and chances to move up to a much higher job. I don’t really know much about the shipping sector or maritime. I think there isn’t much awareness about the sector. So I can’t really say if I will like to work in the shipping sector or not because one needs to have an understanding of the industry he/she would like to work.

To work in the shipping sector is a great deal and yes i would love to work there because there are so many opportunities, one gets enlighten, the salary structure is good and several other benefits which are attached to working in the industry. I would love to work in the ICT department of either the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) or the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). Moving to Shipping companies, Maersk Nigeria is another place with great prospects.
