Clearing agent defrauds importer of N5m

Four docked for stealing items worth N.7m at Apapa port

A 53-year-old clearing agent, Sunny Umoh, was on Thursday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing the sum of N5 million from an importer in Apapa.

Umoh is facing a two-count charge of false pretense and stealing.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Iyabosa Onaiwu, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences sometimes in March 2018 at Apapa.

“The defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N5 million property of one Ambassador Abdul Maikudi Salisu with the pretence that he was going to clear 2 x 20ft containers for him and converted same to his personal use,” Onaiwu said.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant stole the sum of N5 million from Ambassador Salisu.

According to her, the offences are punishable under sections 314(b) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Magistrate O. S Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the Magistrate, must be gainfully employed and must furnish the court with evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the matter till November 12, 2018 for mention.
