The police on Friday arraigned six men before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly smoking weeds suspected to be Indian hemp along Airport Road at Kirikiri Town in Apapa.
The men are Samuel Udoh (32), Shola Olamide (28), Emmanuel Ndubisi (38), Joseph Erus (56), Yusuf Oladumibo (35), and Ayoola Kaseem (36). They are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and possession of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
The prosecutor, Inspector Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 7, 2019 at about 11:18pm along Airport Road at Kirikiri Town, Apapa.
“The defendants conspired together to conduct themselves in a disorderly manner likely to cause the breach of peace by smoking weeds suspected to be Indian hemp in the public place,” Ekpo said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendants had in their possession some wraps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, which they could not give a reasonable account of how they came about.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411, 168 (1 &2) and 329 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni granted them bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The sureties are required to deposit N10,000 into the Chief Registrar’s account and furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the matter till August 12, 2019 for mention.
