The police on Friday arraigned a 40-year-old man identified as Jimoh Muhammed before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing $2,320 (N842,160) and N175,000 – bringing the total to about N1.02 million cash – in Apapa, Lagos.
Muhammed is facing a one-count charge of stealing.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Friday Inedu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 20, 2019 at about 11:30pm at No 35, Marine Road, Apapa.
“The defendant stole $2,320 equivalent to the sum of N842,160 and the sum of N175,000 only. All total sum of N1,017,160 belonging to one Justice Edward Ajayi,” Inedu said.
According to him, the offence is contrary to section 280(1)(a) and punishable under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Temitope Babalola granted him N150,000 bail with two sureties in like sum. The sureties were required to furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till September 30, 2019 for mention.
