A group of maritime stakeholders including the Nigerian Association of Master Mariners (NAMM), and the Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors (AMES), among others, has concluded plans to host a Day of Tribute for late Captain Oyeniyi Adeyemo.
The Day of Tribute, according to the President of NAMM, Capt. Tajudeen Alao, will hold at noon on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at the Mission to Seafarers, 29, Marine Road, Apapa, Lagos.
Captain Adeyemo, who died on August 9, 2021 at the age of 84 years, was a highly respected doyen of the Nigerian maritime community. He served as the President of NAMM and as a Board Member of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA). He also served meritoriously in various capacities at the Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL) and at the National Cargo Handling Company (NAHCO), when the agency was owned by the Federal Government.
He was Chairman of Port Consultative Council (PCC) and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Reduction of Ports and Shipping Company Charges. He also served as a member of the Review Panel on the National Shipping Policy (Decree 10 of 1987) and member of the Marine Board of Inquiry into the sinking of MV River Gurara.
The late Master Mariner also had the honour of serving as Chairman of the defunct National Association of Dock Labour Employers (NADLE) and Chairman of the International Cargo Handling Coordination Association.
“The legendary contributions of this great man to the development of the maritime sector over the past 50 years cannot be overemphasized,” Alao said.
Alao said that the Day of Tribute is the first in the series of other activities lined up for the burial of the late Master Mariner, whose remains will be interred in Lagos on Friday September 24.
