In a major triumph against illicit drug trafficking, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a staggering 1,187 kilograms of “Canadian Loud” — a high-grade and costly strain of cannabis — at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa.
The operation comes just five days after a similar high-profile cocaine seizure, underscoring an intensifying crackdown at Nigeria’s busiest seaport.
The drugs, amounting to 2,374 carefully packaged sachets, were expertly concealed within 55 bags tucked inside a single 1x20ft container (No. FCIU 6369526), which also carried two imported vehicles.
Controller of the Apapa Customs Command, Emmanuel Oshoba, credited the breakthrough to “credible intelligence provided by the NDLEA,” highlighting the strengthening partnership between the two federal agencies.
During a media briefing, Oshoba explained that the joint examination led to the discovery of the illicit cargo, now handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation.
He said the cannabis was found neatly packed in 500-gram sachets, a level of sophistication indicating professional handling.
Praising the seamless collaboration, he reaffirmed the Customs Service’s uncompromising stance on smuggling.
“A few days ago, I stated that no consignment will exit our control from this port without due check. Our synergy as government agencies will always put us ahead of criminal elements,” he said.
He emphasised that while the Service remains committed to revenue collection and trade facilitation, national security is non-negotiable—particularly as the Yuletide season approaches.
“No matter the volume of trade we are processing, we will never sacrifice national security or the economy for any form of trade. While we are focused on collecting maximum revenue for government, our eagle-eyed officers are activated to be alert at all times,” he said.
