Police in Osun State have arrested two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) following a shooting incident in Osogbo that left a driver dead.
The Osun State Police Command said the officers were detained after the incident, which occurred on Sunday in the Dada Estate area of the state capital. According to police spokesperson DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Customs officers were reportedly pursuing suspected smuggled “tokunbo” (foreign-used) vehicles when the shooting happened.
During the chase, the driver of an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla — one of the vehicles being pursued — was shot. He was later confirmed dead by a doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.
The identity of the victim had not been established at the time of filing the report, while his body has been deposited in a morgue.
Police said items recovered from the scene include a Beretta pistol with breech number 125024, 11 rounds of 9mm live ammunition and one expanded 9mm shell. Officers also recovered two vehicles — a white Toyota Corolla with Lagos registration number AAA 400 GQ and the ash-coloured Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982.
Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan has ordered a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The command assured the public that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law and urged residents to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies by providing useful information to aid the investigation.
