The new Commissioner of Police, Western Ports, Bansen Gwana has disclosed that crime rates at the ports in Lagos have been drastically reduced.
The commissioner said this when he visited the Western Ports of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on a familiarization visit.
While soliciting further cooperation between NPA and his command, Gwana said the ports in Lagos area have become “relatively crime free”.
The two major seaports in Lagos are the Lagos Port Complex Apapa and the Tin Can Island Port. Both ports have several smaller jetties operating under them. The ports handle more than 70% of Nigeria’s imports.
The NPA Western Ports General Manager, Chief Michael Ajayi had earlier commended the role played by the officers and men of the Western Ports Command of the Nigeria Police Force in the recently launched enforcement of safety and minimum standards for all trucks operating within the ports in Lagos.
Ajayi said the successes recorded since the commencement of the exercise were largely attributed to the diligence and commitment of the police.
He said the police was fully involved in all the meetings and discussions that culminated in the successful implementation of the minimum truck standards.
He also commended the activities of the Marine Police in protecting the waterfront and pledged NPA’s support to the Police “within the constraints of limited resources”.
