The reign of Nigeria’s Mohammed Barkindo as Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) begins Monday following his appointment at the 169th Meeting of the cartel in Vienna, Austria on June 2nd 2016.
Barkindo was appointed to occupy the position for three years in the first instance with effect from 1st August 2016.
He succeeds Libyan oil minister, Abdalla El-Badri, whose tenure ended on July.
The new Secretary General is coming to the position with a 23 year career in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the oil and gas industry.
Barkindo was Group Managing Director of the NNPC and also served as Acting OPEC Secretary General in 2006.
