33 years after first serving as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Muhammadu Buhari was on Tuesday returned to the position. He was elected at the just concluded ECOWAS Summit in Lome, Togo.
This is Buhari’s second coming as ECOWAS chairman. He first served in the position from January to August 27, 1985 when he was toppled in a bloodless coup by General Ibrahim Babangida.
“The announcement was made shortly after a closed session of Heads of State of the Commission,” Personal Assistant to Buhari on New Media and Engagement, Bashir Ahmad, said in a tweet on Tuesday.
According to him, “President Muhammadu Buhari has been elected the new Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the just concluded ECOWAS Summit in Lome, Togo.
“The announcement was made shortly after a closed session of Heads of State of the Commission.”
Buhari takes over from the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe who has served as the ECOWAS chairman since June 4, 2017.
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon served as the first chairman of the regional body from May 28, 1975 to July 29, 1975.
