Clearing agent allegedly steals N2.34m at Apapa

A 45-year-old clearing agent, Mutari Ushau, was on Thursday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing the sum of N2.34 million under false pretense to clear three units of 40ft containers at Apapa. 

Ushau is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. 

The port prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in July 2019 at Apapa. 

“The defendant conspired together with others at large to obtain money under false pretense. 

“The defendant obtained the sum of N2.34 million from one Alhaji Musa Mallam under false pretense to clear 3x40ft containers of goods to Jigawa State using Dangote Greenview Paper Permit from Dangote Terminal, Apapa,” Esebamen said. 

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 411 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. 

Magistrate A.I Alaka granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum. 

The sureties are required to furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government. 

The Magistrate adjourned the case till December 12, 2019 for mention.
