Clearing agent steals N344,000

A 36-year-old clearing agent, Michael Ihenachor, was on Monday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing the sum of N344,000 to supply cloth.

Ihenachor is facing a two-count charge of false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometimes in May 2019 at about 12pm at No 87, Baale Street, Ajegunle, Apapa.

“The defendant fraudulently obtained the sum of N344,000 from one Umeh Vincent Ifeanyi with pretence of supplying him cloth which he knew to be false,” Bassey said.

According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Ramot Ayilara granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till January 14, 2020 for trial.
