The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is about now concluding a two-day management retreat for its top management staff in Abuja.
Addressing attendees at the retreat, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, reiterated his commitment to leveraging technology to streamline customs operations.
“In 2024, we cannot afford to remain entrenched in outdated practices. Stakeholders are demanding a customs service that embraces technology to enhance efficiency and transparency,” Adeniyi said.
He encouraged the senior customs officers to champion the digitalisation efforts and to harness internal resources to expedite the implementation of a proposed electronic cargo tracking system.
“It is imperative that we modernise every facet of the customs enforcement ecosystem. We must also integrate technology to fortify our operations,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Trade Modernisation Project Limited, Saleh Ahmadu, lauded Adeniyi’s resolve, highlighting the pivotal role of trade in national development.
He said the modernisation initiative would revolutionise customs operations, fostering a conducive environment for trade across Nigeria and the African continent.
Also speaking, Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of ICT/Modernisation, Kikelomo Adeola, said the retreat was a “landmark” for the NCS as it “embarks on a journey to recalibrate and modernise the service, aligning it with international standards”.
