An officer of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mohammed Umar-Abdul, on Tuesday dragged a 47-year-old man identified as Jibrin Attom before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly collecting N850,000 and failing to give his daughter in marriage to him as agreed.
Attom is facing a two-count charge bordering on false pretence and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Kolade Tedunjaye told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offenses “sometime in 2016” at Ibafon Street, Olodi-Apapa, Lagos.
“The defendant obtained the sum of N850,000 from one Mohammed Umar-Abdul with the pretence that he was going to give his daughter, Kathoma Attom to him in marriage, a representation which he knew to be false,” the prosecutor told the court.
He also accused the defendant of stealing and converting the money “to his personal use”.
According to the prosecutor, the alleged offenses are punishable under sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate B.M Amore granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate ruled that the sureties must be resident in Lagos and must furnish the court with proof of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
He adjourned the case till May 6, 2019 for mention.
