Customs officer drowns while trying to intercept contraband

An Assistant Inspector of Customs attached to the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has died after a boat carrying him and other operatives of the command capsized along Vawhe-Isalu creeks, Ogun State.
The incident occurred on Monday when operatives of the Akere Surveillance/Monitoring team under Idiroko Outstation led by one Inspector of Customs (IC) Ajayi A.S with official patrol boat registration number CPM 191 were trying to intercept a boat suspected to be carrying smuggled items, a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Isah Sulaimon said.

Sulaiman said the accident resulted in the drowning of one Aliyu A.A., an Assistant Inspector of Customs, whose body was found underneath the river.

He said the deceased has been buried on Wednesday in his hometown in Kastina State according to Islamic rites.
