The Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) recorded N25.6 billion as revenue in September 2016.
The Area Controller, Comptroller Bashar Yusuf, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Thursday in Lagos by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, Uche Ejesieme.
Yusuf said the command had adopted some measures to enhance its revenue, including identifying and blocking all areas of revenue leakages; and focusing on capacity building in modern Customs operations.
He lauded the commitment of officers and men of the command in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The controller said that Tin Can, as a benchmark command was determined to make the port a hub of the sub-region, with the entrenchment of due diligence/process in all areas of its operations. He said that the role of Customs in national development could not be over-emphasized.
Yusuf said that the Command would not renege on its function of revenue collection, irrespective of the present global economic challenges being faced by nations.
The controller was optimistic that the latest innovation of involving stakeholders in Customs training program would restore sanity to the system as well as change the orientation of those who believe in circumventing the due revenue process.
He called for stronger relations between the command and the stakeholders to achieve expected results.
“Beyond the fact that we hold regular meetings with the critical stakeholders, I have always given the terminal and sectional heads a marching order.
“This is to ensure that all importers and their agents are compelled to comply with the extant laws on international trade,” Yusuf said.
He commended importers and agents who complied, for their deep sense of patriotism, adding that they had helped the command in achieving its revenue targets.
The controller assured compliant importers and their agents that they would continue to receive the support of the command.
Yusuf said he would do everything possible to ensure that those complying enjoy the full benefits of compliance.
