Customs seize N102m worth of marijuana in Ogun

The Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun One Area Command has handed over loads of cannabis sativa worth N102million seized from smugglers to representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (MDLEA) in the state.

Controller of the command, Bamidele Makinde, handed over the seized drugs to the NDLEA Commander in Ogun, Ishaku Kwajafa, on Monday in Abeokuta.

Makinde said the handover of the illicit drugs to the NDLEA was to further strengthen the synergy between the two agencies.

He said, “In line with respect for each agency’s statutory functions and in order to further strengthen the synergy between the NCS and NDLEA, the Ogun I Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, with the approval of the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hammed Ibrahim Ali (retd.), hands over intercepted Cannabis Sativa of 319  sacks (raw), 476 wraps (book size) and 96 wraps (coconut size) with the Duty Paid Value of N102,848,768.00 to the NDLEA, Ogun State Command, Abeokuta, Ogun State.”

Responding, Kwajafa blamed the spike in crime on youths indulgence in drugs, urging the masses to assist the agency in intelligence gathering.

He said, “I shouldn’t be the only one worried, everyone should be worried because it is not a good thing at all.”
