DP World has set a new benchmark at London Gateway, handling more than three million TEUs in 2025 and marking a remarkable 52 per cent rise from the 1.9 million recorded in 2024.
The surge was driven by the opening of a fourth berth and additional vessel calls from Gemini Cooperation’s Asia–Europe services, reinforcing London Gateway’s growing role as a major hub for global trade.
Southampton also recorded a strong year, surpassing two million TEUs. Together, DP World’s UK terminals moved more than five million TEUs in 2025, contributing to a national container market exceeding nine million TEUs.
Expansion at London Gateway continues at pace. Construction is underway on two new all-electric berths as part of a £1 billion development programme, which will bring the total to six berths capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships.
A second rail terminal became operational in 2025, enhancing inland connectivity, while a BOXBAY container handling system is set to be introduced through a further £170 million investment over the next two years.
Stephen Whittingham, Executive Vice President for North Europe, said every container handled supports British businesses and everyday life, noting that surpassing five million TEUs demonstrates how DP World’s investments are enabling goods to move reliably, sustainably and efficiently.
Southampton is also preparing for the future, with new quay cranes to be installed as part of a £60 million investment. Once completed, the terminal will boast Europe’s tallest crane fleet, strengthening its capacity to serve the next generation of container vessels.
