A 38-year-old truck driver, Adedayo Olowokere, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court for allegedly pushing a police officer with his truck while controlling traffic in Apapa.
Olowokere is facing a three-count charge of obstruction, reckless driving and injuring a police officer while on duty.
The prosecutor, Alexander Esebamen, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 25, 2019 at about 9:30am along Apapa Expressway, Kirikiri.
“The defendant being the driver in charge of one Mack truck with registration number GGE 984 XX drove same on the public highway and caused obstruction to other road users,” Esebamen said.
The prosecutor also said that the defendant drove recklessly or inconsiderately on the highway. He pushed one Sergeant Abdulrasheed Ibrahim and caused him severe injury on his head and hand while performing his legitimate duty of controlling traffic.
According to him, the offences are punishable under sections 40(3), 36(1 & 2) and 19(1) of Road Traffic Act, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2012.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Magistrate Adenike Alaka granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.
The sureties are required to furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case till August 28, 2019 for mention.
