The Ports Criminal Investigation Department (PCID) of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday arraigned a 35-year-old exporter, Godwin Monyem, before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N2 million worth of charcoal at Tin Can Island Port, Apapa, Lagos.
Monyem is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Adeniyi Balogun told the court that the defendant committed the offence on August 12, 2016 at the Tin Can Island Port.
“The defendant conspired with others to steal two 40-foot containers of charcoal valued N2 million property of Vanval Multi-Concepts Resources. The container numbers are CMAU 145432/8 and UESU 472944/7,” Balogun said.
According to him, the offences are punishable under section 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.
Magistrate O.S. Abioye granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The sureties must be gainfully employed with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The Magistrate said one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant.
