Federal Government will partner with the union of African Shippers Council in order to reduce the cost of shipping in the African sub-region.
The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, made this known while receiving a 12-man delegation from the Union of African Shippers Council who paid him a courtesy visit at the weekend in his office in Abuja.
He explained that such partnership would not only make shipping easier and cheaper in Africa but would also ensure adequate protection of shipping interest in the maritime trade of the sub-region.
“From the point of view of Nigerian government, we are committed to the Nigerian Shippers Council, Union of African Shippers Council and Global Shippers Forum,” he said.

A statement from Deputy Director, Press, Federal Ministry of Transport, Yetunde Sonaike, said that the Minister, who described the visit as timely, added that the Federal Government has taken a number of steps within the Nigerian ports to reposition them for efficiency and make them cheaper for business.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, who is the outgoing Secretary-General of Union of African Shippers’ Council, Serigne Thiam Diouf, told the Minister that the team was in the country to brief him about the organisation’s forthcoming general elections and also to solicit increased support and cooperation of the Federal Government in its efforts to actualise the organization’s objectives in the member countries.
