Fire guts two fishing trawlers in Lagos

Two fishing trawlers docked at Kirikiri Jetty along the Apapa area of Lagos State went up in flames on Monday, destroying property estimated at millions of naira.

SHIPS & PORTS DAILY learnt that the fire started around 2pm from one of the trawlers before spreading to the other.

Firemen from the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) and the Lagos State Fire Service were among the several rescue agencies that combated the flames.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency was alerted to the incident around 2.32pm, adding that by that time, the fire had razed the vessels.

He said, “Our men from Sari Iganmu and Isolo joined other private and public firefighters to combat the inferno.

“When we arrived at the scene, we still met the fire raging. Sadly, the fire wreaked much havoc.

“We tried to investigate the cause of the fire, but we were told that the engines were not running as of the time the fire started, so nobody could tell us what really happened before the fire started.”
